Open Data Program

On 25 November 2014 Council endorsed an ‘open by default’ policy position supported by five Open Data Principles (Word, 38kb). This allows simple access to machine-readable Council-owned data under open licences.

The City of Melbourne’s Open Data program objectives are to increase transparency, improve public services and support new economic and social initiatives.

As part of the four-year Council Plan, the City of Melbourne has a dedicated goal and outcomes relating to “An accessible, transparent and responsive organisation”.

Through increased public disclosure and access to information, the City of Melbourne is aiming to become one of the most transparent councils in Australia.

Continuing to develop new ways to gather and share information to support innovations and developments which underpin the growth of the city is also the focus of our Knowledge City goal.

The City of Melbourne provides data publicly, via our City of Melbourne mapsUrban Forest Visual and Pedestrian Monitoring applications, however we would like to make more data available for reuse in open formats.

Online platform

Our pilot open data platform is currently in “Beta”; we’ll be improving it based on your feedback, so have a look and let us know what you think. We are inviting developers to work with us to improve its functionality. The data on the site is real data, which you can use right now and we intend to keep releasing data of value, welcoming your feedback.

There will always be some information that the City of Melbourne will not release, as we have a duty to obey the law when it comes to commercial copyright, security concerns and the privacy of individuals.
